Federal Reserve Bank to Irradiate Money
Denver, Colo.
API
In an effort to sterilize our circulating currency,
the Denver branch of the Federal Reserve system
is installing the first gamma ray irradiation machine.
If administered at appropriate levels, all gamma ray
radiation can be used to sterilize objects, a technique
used in the production of medical instruments and
disposables, such as syringes as well as in the disin-
fection and sterilization of food. Small doses of
ionizing radiation (electron beam processing, X-rays
and gamma rays)may be used to kill bacteria on coins,
bills, or other organic material, including blood.
The unit is expected to be in full operation at the
Denver branch by mid-May.
Sam Snead, Denver branch executive for the
Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, declined
comment about the use of radioactive isotopes
on our circulating money, but did inform the
Denver Post, a press release is pending from
the US Treasury Dept.

Think of those unsanitary revolving towel hand dryers; now think of currency and coins.
or at the very least boil them in oil. Make that olive
oil, we wouldnt want to raise their cholesterol.

At the 1964 Worlds Fair in NY they( i forget who ) were giving out irradiated dimes.
You supplied the dime and they gave it back to you in a blue holder that said "neutron irradiated"
I still have mine. It was a circulated merc.
<< <i>Like this one??
>>
Not exactly. The holder was the size of a silver dollar, and made of rubbery plastic. I'll see if I can find it and post a photo.

Yes!
Now, that is quite a design change! Is the dime bare? On the previous type shown, we were told that the plastic cover was necesary to protect us from the slight radiation from the dime.
